Wow, you made quick work of that Glen, sweet!:D

I can't believe you are running out of room in the Starcraft hanger already. Drawing up prints for another?:)

I need to get my boat in that hangar. It seems that it's where all the work gets done. You can probably do two in the time I can do one.

Question, (i'm new to boats) just got my first. Do yo plan on spraying that metal bottom on the inside with primer or rustolem to prevent rust in the future?

Movin along quickly, dozer! Congrats on the new boat :D.

What happened to your other SS? Maybe I missed it, but didn't you get one with a Mercruiser?

Thanks Boatguy. The other SS is next to this one in the shop, it is not going anywhere, I like it too much.
Yesterday I got the inside all pressure washed and with the help of a couple of guys we have it turned upside down on the trailer ready for sanding. I will post some photos later.

Pictures of the work that got done yesterday as promised. Progress will be slow for the next while as I have to get the last two outside walls on the house srcapped and painted. It was way to wet to do last summer so it has been two years so it has to get done.

Okay, So the weather is not cooperating with the house painting so I have to work on the SS. I have been sanding the hull like crazy, and have a few questions. What does everyone use around the rivet heads?
I have 38 extra holes in the transom ranging in size from 1/8" to 1&1/4" that have to be filled in. The smaller ones I will install a rivet with 5200 on them, but the biggers ones ? Do they make caps or plugs to block off through the hull fittings? On my 16 SS, I cut 1/4" thick aluminum washers with a hole saw then put one inside and one out with 5200 on them then bolted them together with a 1/4" stainless bolt. It worked but?
Paint question? I want to use Rustoleum, but the Proffesional is not available in Canada. Has anyone used the regular Rustoleum, and with what results? The Canadian web site sorta says to use Tremclad ?
Questions, Questions lol

Re: 1979 Starcraft 18 SS Here we go again!!

I had all sorts of holes in my transom. I ended up going with SS carriage bolts for most everything, sealed up with 5200...

Some were small, some were big, but I decided to keep all the bolts the same size so it would have a consistent, more finished look to it anyway.

Have fun!:D

Thanks Jas, that is pretty much how mine is going to look after filling all the holes. Looks Like I am going to make a run down to Havre Montana to get the paint. Plywood is a lot less expensive so I will pick that up too.

As for the extra holes in mine that aren't covered by a potentially ill gotten sheet of aluminum; They will get the Marine Tex treatment. Same as the gunwales but the new transom is the backer plate.

looks like I'm falling behind you. I'm working outside so thats my excuse.

I just found something Bondo posted that pertains to your paint delema. Hope this helps

Okay, made a little, or a lot of progress the last few days. Took a trip down to Montana to pick up plywood (saved $190.00 over local prices) and paint. Got the boat sanded and a light coat of self etching primer on the bare spots. Cannot find Zinc Chromate anywhere up here or in the town I visited in Mt. The body shop supply place I purchaced the self etch from guaranteed me this would work, ( I hope so $20.00 a can). Going to let it dry till tomorrow morning give it a light sand and prime with Rusto.

EZ,the only yellow that will be going back on this SS will be the stuff that is still under the new paint on the splash well and councils, lol.

Sprintst, it is hard to believe how much more we have to pay for wood up here in Canada. It was a pretty quick trip as it is only a two hour drive. But it was nice to get away, and Havre seems like a real nice town.

Some more progress, ROLLING AND TIPPING "SUCKS", it took about 5 minutes and I knew it was not the way to go for me. Out came the HVLP gun and it was done in ten minutes. I also got the transom halves laminated.

There isn't anything quite like seeing a hull with all new paint, even if it is primer. I'm with you guys on the spraying. Its so much faster.
What did you use to bond the transom?
All looking good!

Thanks Jas, you got that right, I have only ever used a suction feed spray gun, and like these HVLP way better. Id does make my compressor work pretty hard.

Thanks MP, I used Gorilla polyurethane glue, totally water proof and strong as all get out. It didn't stay primer for very long. Photos are of the first of two color coats.:D:D
