it might be something as simple as stuck rings or a blown head gasket.

The mechanic was not able to get a spark either. I bought a few engines off this guy and he said it would cost at least $800 to fix. He's not trying to sell me another motor, just giving it to me straight.

Junk donor boats can be a good source for inexpensive outboards. Search craigslist.

An idea to think about. Get the motor to run. Then try something first before tossing in the towel. Warm the motor up to operating temp and use a can of Quicksilver power tune on the motor as directed. Once clear of the PT run another compression check and see what the numbers are. Running a cold compression check on an old motor that;s been sitting for years is not a good indication of it's health.

What Rob said above is absolutely true any two stroke motor that has been sitting for a while could very likely have stuck rings especially if it was carboned up when parked. I have had the compression come up 20psi per hole after a good decarb.

I may be able to get a donor boat with a 1978 140 HP Evinrude. The boat is rated for 150 HP but do you think 140 is too much motor for the boat? The 140 weighs as much as a 115 HP.

No not of that era 140, the problem isn't so much the weight but that and the HP. New motors are prop rated and that 78 would be at the flywheel rating.

+1. The only difference (besides going faster  ) is that the 140 may be more thirsty :hungry: depending on how you drive it.

Watermann and Classiccat, Thanks for your input. I think I will go with the 140, and yes I know if will be a bit thirsty but the price is right.

There's approximately a 64# weight penalty as well (~365 vs ~301)...I was a little surprised that it's this much.

EDIT: ^^ above weights are from a page referencing the 1992 Evinrude catalog (prop-rated engines).

The model I am looking at is # 140843C with a weight of 318. Classiccat, is this what you were referring to?

Ah...I didn't dig very deep...quick google search took me to a Boston Whaler site which referenced a 1992 Evinrude catalog (prop-rated engines). That would explain the difference.

If I remember right isn't there a V6 and a V4 140 with the V4 being the better of the two because of less weight and fuel consumption, One thing about having mo power is you can always throttle back to save gas.:D

Amen to that! You can never get more from less though. ;)

Attached are some images of my first attempt at making the bow seats. I used 1 inch closed cell foam under the vinyl. I will install a hatch in the opening in the bow seat. Is there a way to install the seats with rivets without ponding water in the dimples?

Update: I just bought a 115 hp 1985 Evinrude last night to replace my non working Mercury 85.

Thanks, Bob

That should be a great motor for an 18' SS.

Ponding water, make the person creating the pond soak it up with a towel.

I picked up my donor boat with a 1985 Evinrude 115 hp outboard in Wisconsin today. The three and a half hour drive was worth it, even if it was snowing up north. Anyone need a 1976 fiberglass 16' Crestliner without an engine?

Watermann. That is Rawhide Ranch where I bought the boat. They help boys learn a trade and get their lives together. If that was my personal boat yard, my wife would have divorced me by now.
