I have a 77 model 7.5 that will start up if you hold the throttle valve open manually and once you start it and let go of the throttle valve it runs wide open. The only way to slow the rpm's down is to pull the choke about 3/4 the way out. I got this motor from a neighbor who left it sitting up for years and i want to get it running right and put it on my jon boat. My question is, does this sound like a problem that a carb cleaning and rebuild would take care of or is there anything else i should look for?

Carb cleaning and a gasket/fuelpump kit installed should fix it as it sounds as if butterfly is hung open in carb due to gum or dirt dauber...
