I've recently bought a 1976 1500 in line 6. There is no tacho. Can I fit a generic tacho or do I need to get a Mercury one? I need to attach it to the engine as the throttle control doesn't have a connection. This is a great resource, thanks to all who help on it.

You need a Marine Tachometer designed for an outboard. It will have a pulse adjustment on the backside to match the motor. They are available in the iboats store. ;) Welcome aboard.

Normally a MerControl would have a three pronged connection for the tach. It will use the brown, black and white wires for signal, ground and +12VDC, respectively.

Unfortunately this came with an aftermarket control. I'll buy a tacho here I guess.
