Can anyone tell me the size and type of wiring that was used on the 1972 mercury, model 110, 9.8h.p. outboard motors? This outboard motor has the points type ignition. Thanks.

Coil wire's, wire's going to points, ground wire, kill switch wire, all wiring seems to be the same size and type wiring, just different colors. Thanks.

I ordered a clymer, mercury outboard motor manual today, maybe it will say something about the type of wiring used on the 1972 mercury model 110, 9.8h.p. outboard motor. I should have it in about a week.

Just a guess but I'd say you'd be safe with 16 gauge stranded copper.

I would use the 16 ga. wire if it were a fine strand wire like used from factory. Using 14 ga. would be better as the factory wires were/are treated for marine use that helps keep corrision down in the wet enviorment that is present. The fine strand 14 ga. wire will carry the voltage and amperage better. Coating all the terminals with a rubber coating paste is very worth while, and can be bought at most electrical supply houses. Re: 1972 mercury, model 110 9.8h.p. outboard motor wire size?

Thank's for the replie's Dave 1027 and oldman570, I found some fine strand wire that is for marine use since I last posted to the forum that looked to be about the same size as the factory wiring, but I had a hard time decideing if the factory wiring was 12 or 14 ga. in size as the wiring was falling apart pretty badly, so I went with the 12 ga. wire, did I do good or bad by choosing the 12 ga. wire? Not much of an electrician, just don't under stand the stuff. Thank's.

The 12 Ga. wire is fine as long as it will be flexable enough for your use. It will carry more Amps than the smaller wire. Make sure that you fuse the system if it is electric start. No fuse should be needed if manual start. JMO

Wire is plenty flexable, motor is pull start. Thank's for your time in answering my question's.
