The engine wiring harness on my 1972 1400 has 6 male prongs (2 large, 4 small). I plan on swapping this motor onto my boat which currently has a 1973 850 on it. The 850 has 7 male prongs (2 large, 5 small). The female end of the plug that runs to the control box plugs into the 1400 harness without a problem - just no 7th prong to plug into the harness on the boat. My question is what is the 7th prong on the 850 for? the 850 harness was replaced by the prior owner and I noticed that there is one wire coming from the harness that is taped off and not used. I hope this taped off wire relates to this 7th prong that is not on the 1400 harness. what would this 7th prong be used for?

And does anyone foresee any electrical problems with hooking up the 1400 engine harness to the exisiting harness on the boat running to the control box?

What color is the taped wire?

its pink. but its an aftermarket harness and the colors do not follow the stock scheme. the harness is actually pretty poor quality and may even be a home made job....

If it is in the middle of the plug it is 12V from the ignition switch to switchbox on the 1973 850.If it is the Salmon colored wire that is for a kill switch that grounds a distributorless ignition system. It is a dead end on a 1973 850. External harnesses going to the remote control are interchangable. The internal engine harnesses are different.

Linc, The ignition systems on those two motors are identical. It sounds like you have an aftermarket harness. Just ignore the extra wire. It is supposed to be orange and connect to the ADI Switchbox (later model motors) to ill the ignition.
