1968 Evinrude Drive Shaft Seal

From what I can tell, the new drive shaft seals are not as deep (thick) as the original. When placing the new one in the housing, do i put it in flush with the housing, or do I seat it as far in as possible into the housing, (so the top of the seal and housing would not be at the same height. )

Actually, you have a bit of choice there. It really doesn't matter, except you have an opportunity to set it at a different height to avoid running on a worn area of the shaft. Better yet, if there is room, install two seals, back to back.
