Just bought the Johnson and it needs some work. Anybody know if the Cook manual is worth the $83 vs the Seloc at $30. Common sense would say yes but the most expensive isn't always the best.

Yea, I agree $83 is too steep. I would try ebay first for a factory manual.

I found 65 and 69 factory manuals.
Would either of these be close enough? Some of the experts could probably answer this question.

1965 Evinrude 6hp, $21.99 + free shipping:

If you know nothing about boat motors, you will not know much more with a Seloc manual. I am sure one of the 'experts' will pipe in and let you know which other years are close enough to get you through the repairs. The Ken Cook manuals are new printings of the original factory manuals. If you can find an original on E-bay, it will be the same thing.

The '69 manual would be a better purchase for your motor. The '65 model has the gear box from the older 5.5hp motors. It has a spring relief assembly located below the water pump plate, that the newer motors don't have. The prop shaft is also different on the '65. Once again, it is the one from the 5.5hp motors, with both the cotter key and shear pin at the outer end of the shaft.

If you find a manual of any year that has the newer gearbox assembly and the magneto ignition with the coils under the flywheel, you should be ok.

Don't pay $83 for a manual - you can get one much cheaper. I bought mine on EBay for about fifteen bucks with shipping. You can also go to www.shop.evinrude.com for a parts "explosion" and part number list. Their info goes back to 1968, which is close enought for your purposes.
