Ok so over the last week I picked up 2 1965 40 hp Big Twin short shafts. They look identical except for the color one is the typical evinrude bluenof the era and the other is kind of gray. They have different model numbers. The blue one is 40553M and ths grayish one is 40552A. Is the only difference color or was one orginally a longshaft. Ths lowers don't look like they have been changed.

As a side note they both run like champs and have between 110 and 105 psi per cylinder.

Thanks for any input.

That is exactly the difference.

The 40553 is a long shaft, the 40552 a short shaft. Originally.
