Re: 1963 Mercury 500 50hp

 Any damage, B?

Unfortunately,
Three damaged props
Four mangled skegs
One lower cowling cracked
Two upper cowlings cracked
Chipped paint

Its nothing I cant fix but its money that should be going to the Chieftain…I really worried there might be a bent prop shaft or two.

Ouch! That's not a good thing to see when the garage door goes up. Hope you can find the parts cheap so the Chieftain doesn't get delayed.

I'm guessing I'll have the cowls welded, the props are going to be painful if they cant be straightened.

Hurts to look at that. Did you check to see if it's covered by your insurance?

Tom, it was heart wrenching to see..... The MERC 350 you gave me fared better than the 500's. The prop will need some attention and the lower cowl has a hairline crack on the port side handle. I'm hoping the prop shops, on the north shore, can fix it and the cowl will get welded before its painted.

Ill be looking for two MERC 500 upper cowls, if anyone has some......looking at them more, i feel they're too far gone

Made a road trip to get some parts to fix the 500's. 150.00 dollars later, I have one upper and lower cowling that will work and two motors that I didn't need..... Early 50's Johnson, 64 Merc500, and a 75 Merc500 long.

I traded the Johnson for 5 gallons of synthetic lower unit oil. The shop owner has a soft spot for OMC engines.:joyous:

Yes. they are also only one of the very few places that can re-hub a volvo penta prop..... and fix broken blades..... and straighten blades......

They have a 1 day turn around for us (we are fairly local). They even know my wife on a first name basis due to the number of times we have been there in the last year.

Give them a call.

Got one of the 500's striped down over the past week. Going to split the block today, if the crank and bore are good, she'll get rebuilt.
