1963 Merc 850, Distributor rotor wont come off?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to remove the rotor so that I can get into the points?

I tried pulling it but it seems to be stuck. Is there a trick to it?

This is hard to believe but mercury built a special set of puller pliers to remove them.

Welcome to the forum!!
If you don't have the special pair of pliers, I have in the past broken the old rotor in order to get it off. Be careful but that is the only way I could get one off one time. Just use a good pair of pliers and break it off until it loosens up on the shaft. Make sure you get all of the pieces that fall off.

You wouldn't have a pic of the pliers would you? Im shore I could make a pair if I knew what they looked like.

I just bought an old Steber Craft 16 foot runabout and it came with this Merc. (This is my first boat) I managed to get it started, I was told the last time it ran was 3-4 years ago and that was the story from 2 previous owners ago. I want to fit new points and get it tuned up.

Do you have a manual or is that from the web? I bought a manual on cd and it seems that it doesn't cover everything.

We have merc manuals for just the reason you stated.
