I have a 1963 40 hp johnson electric shift outboard model RD25D that i am useing on my boat right now. I know a guy who wants to sell me a 1964 40 hp johnson electric shift outboard model RKL 26R real cheap. There is nothing wrong with the motor that he wants to sell me. I even think that it runs better than mine. What i am wondering does these parts change out with each other so that i could use one of the motors as a part motor?

Something's wrong here. A RD-25 is a manual start, manual shift, short shaft motor. Is that what you have, or have the numbers been switcherooed? The RKL-26 is an electric shift, electric start with generator, long shaft motor. Except for those differences, most parts are the same. I think the '64 has a different choke.

Sorry you are right there was something wrong. My model is not a RD25D.

It is a RK25D. Sorry about that.

Yes the chokes are different, the 63 used a hot water choke while the 64 used a hot air choke with an electric solinoid to unchoke the engine. Exhaust manifolds therefore were different. There was also some minor differences in the remote control too. The 63 motor used 24:1 gas/oil and the 64, 50:1.

That makes more sense.
Just the longshaft and carburetor then (driveshaft longer and I think the water tube has an extension. Longer wires too I suppose. I believe '64 was the year they went to the heat choke on the carb while '63 is still a water choke setup. I think they went to fixed high speed jets the same year too.

EDIT: Too slow. :)

my dads 63 had a fixed jet carb, and water choke. Shift wires were the same, there were two sets of sealing ridges 5 inches apart near the middle
