I just bought a couple old outboards as a new hobby.I've been searching for info on my 1954 Johnson CD-11.. Are these motors any count? And can anyone here tell me what the "CD" stands for in the model number?
Thanks

Excellent motors and still very common. I have one of those now and had a couple others in the past. Not sure what the CD stands for, but its only part of the model number from what I can tell. Johnson has been known to use letters in their model numbers throught history.

Post some pics. Let's see what you have. :D

Those are good motors too. I had a few of them in the past as well. It's pretty much the same as the old 5.5 except the powerhead has a few minor differences. The 7.5 was produced from about 1949 or 50 and discontinued in 1958 in favor of the 5.5's (which that basic design continued till 1979) and the 7.5 was re-introduced in 1980 and was produced till 1983. This model was pretty close to the 6's and 8's of that era.

I think you'll have just as much fun, requardless of which motor you start with. :D

Re: 1954 Johnson CD-11

Ok my next question is for both the Evinrude 7.5 & Johnson CD-11... I got the Evinrude first and without the pressure tank needed a week later I bought the Johnson because it came with a pressure tank. But during the week before I got the tank I read into putting a Mikuni carb pump on so I could use a regular single line (non-pressurized) fuel tank...Does anyone have any experience with one of these little pumps? Is it something any of you would recommend? Any pros and cons?

A lot of guys here swear by them. There is a link that shows how to install one, but not sure what. Someone should chime in and tell you.

One of the AOMCI guys was nice enough to post this youtube video of a 7.5hp conversion to a single line fuel pump system. It works great on 5.5hp and 7.5hp Evinrude/Johnson motors!! He used a Briggs and Stratton fuel pump on his.

Here is a link to a article that was published in duckworks magazine that explains the the same process.

Keep all the parts, so you decide to return the motors back to the pressure tank system you will be good to go. The process is easily reversed.

Good luck.

Here's three sites I recomend;

http://www.precisionservoutboard.com/Information/ArtsFivePointPlan/tabid/65/Default.aspx

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/07/columns/max/articles.htm

The last link is a series of articles by Max Wawrzyniak extolling the virtues of older OMC motors.
Read the "Start To Finish" articles, he revives a CD12 in one of the articles.
I learned a lot from these links when I revived My 1955 CD12.
It's a great motor. And a great first project.
Good Luck with Your motor!
