115 hp is fuel pump bad

I have a 1979 115 hp mercury. The motor turns but will not start. I pumped the fuel ball until it got hard. I had a little fuel come out of the top and bottom carbs, so I thought I might have flooded the engine. I turned the motor over a couple times plus choke. Nothing. I waited about 5 minutes and tried again. Still nothing. I tried the choke and still nothing. So, I am thinking it might be flooded. I pulled two plugs out and they were dry. Is this a fuel pump issue?

It is likely not a fuel pump issue. Also, these motors are hard to flood. It is time for you th check if you have spark and compression on all cylinders. If you have spark and even compression across the cylinders, choke the motor as much as you can, and it should start. Are the carbs clean?

If your engine has a dist(no serial number) and the battery is a low amperage or deep cycle the engine probable won't start because of low voltage, you would need at least 10.5 volts to the system to run

Chris you could be right but I think some early run 79s were blessed with them too--Bob

Re: 115 hp is fuel pump bad

I do have a distrbuter on this motor . Ccompression is even on all cyl.plus I do have spark. I tried firing it with a everstart marine cranking 625 and 500 cold cranking. Is this enough. If not I have a trojan deep cycle 12 volt 820 marine cranking amp. Am I better off trying the trojan and then choke the **** out of it and how long should I crank with choke before I should replace fuel pump. Is this a decent motor? There is no serial number on the motor. Thanks for all the info...

57 Belair, It should start and run after a good prime, For a few seconds. Even with a bad fuel pump. Check and see if you have a good strong spark. Like laddie said. Also Like Chris said above they are hard to flood.
Good luck, Tim also known as Tim1955

1957 belair. Are you a proud owner of a 57 chevy?
What about you Chris 1956 That nickname have anything to do with a old Chevy?
Myself I have had my 55 for 31 years.

Back to your starting issue 57 belair. Make sure that your motor is all the way back when cold starting.
Give it a good prime. Pump bulb firm. Then 1 or 2 extra slow hard pumps. You may have to choke it also.
It should start this way. Some inlines can be hard to start when cold.
If it still don't start let us know. Then we can go from there. Good Luck, Tim
