I have a 1965 Evinrude 18 hp Fastwin It needs a lower unit. My question is what lower units will fit this motor ? Is mine one of the one that require the power head to be removed for the shift rod to be disconnected ?

Thank you in advance

Well, I just converted a 1968 to a short shaft by using parts from a 1960. The bottom gear cover was not the same but the internal parts were identical. Soooo, I am not an expert and do not claim to be, but I think most drives are interchangeable within a 4-5yr span if not more. In answer to you question about the shift rod, look for the side cover and you will find a connector inside that needs the lower screw loosened to remove the rod without removing the power head.Evinrude 18803M Outboard 18hp 005.jpg

The 5-bolt lower unit first appeared in 1955, and was made way up into the 1970's. Internal parts changed over the years, but the complete units will all swap. Just watch it if you try to use one too new into the later years.

+1. Great old motor you've got there. I have a '66 20 hp myself. Almost any FD/E model motor's LU from about '55-'73ish should work. Here's a parts catalog with exploded diagrams for your entire motor and a great all around maintenance link. I recently had to purchase a clutch dog for my motor and I was able to find what I need by placing a WTB ad on aomci.org. In fact, I got an entire new set of gears and dog for the price most others wanted for the dog alone. Good luck. Keep us posted.
