It is not an Alpha. Could be an R drive.

Also Don
A guy up the road from me has a Sangster with a 4 cylinder mercruiser with the same out drive will this work on my 165 mercruiser?

Re: WHAT is this leg

If that 4 cylinder is a 120 or 140, no it won't work on your engine. You need a 1.65 ratio, the 4 cylinder is 1.98.
Now if that 4 cylinder is a 470................

Re: WHAT is this leg

I am curious what the thing coming of the top cover is. It looks like it has an air hose fitting on it. I have never seen that before.

Re: WHAT is this leg

Ahh. I was wondering why the hell there would be an air hose connector on there.

so the plate that the gimble is bolted to has a differant bolt pattern to the block? it,s just the gimble I need the leg unit seems to be good on mine

Re: WHAT is this leg

I'm not sure what you are calling a plate and a gimbal. No such thing as a "gimbal" on the back of your boat.

Re: WHAT is this leg

Anything 1966 to 1990 are interchangeable at the 'major assembly' level. What Don's talking about as not suitable for your engine is the internal ratio of the gears. Physically, if would bolt up, but the different ratio will make the propeller the wrong size, so a change of prop would be needed, if the right size prop exists..

Re: WHAT is this leg

You need the proper ratio in the drive for your engine. If just changing a prop was all that was needed, the drive manufacturers wouldn't make so many different gear ratios. Props need to be in the 17" to 23" pitch range for best over all performance. You get there by changing gear ratio's.
That is why you can take a 19" pitch prop off a 3.0L engine with a 1.98 gear ratio and still get great results when used on a 5.7L engine with a 1.50 gear ratio. And have proper WOT rpm for both engines.

Re: WHAT is this leg

Without knowing exactly what the "one up the road" has, I wouldn't bet on everything being exact. It's the little details that can throw a wrench into the works.
Why are you replacing the gimbal ring and gimbal housing?
