My son and I have recently purchased a bass boat with a 1989 Mariner Magnum II 150 on it. Every time we go out, we get stranded for a time cause the engine will not turn over. It cranks great on the trailer and in the water. But then after running to fishing spot - go to crank and there is no response to the turn of the key. At first i thought it was heat related, but the last time it did it to me, I went to spot and fished for almost 3 hours and the engine was not even warm when i turned the key. I would fish a few minutes, then try again till finally turned the key and ignition. I have replaced the control unit with to solve if it was a neutral safety switch - it still did it. I replace the ignition switch with a brand new one - it did it again! Does any one have similar and if so - WHAT WAS IT? It is driving us crazy to not be able to go out with out a chance of not getting back in without a tow or waiting till it decides to turn over with the key.

When this happens, does your trim work? If so, I would look for a poor connection somewhere starting with the main connection at the starter. If remember correctly, there's a safety switch some where that will shut down your engine if you were running along and hit something causing the engine abruptly 'jump' up. Also, some other things I'd consider. How old is the battery. Could be its draining down while fishing. If it happens again, I'd try gently tapping on the battery connection, starter, etc, and giggling the wire harness that goes to the engine while trying the key start (might have a broken wire)...Good luck...BF

Are you getting nothing when turning key(silence)?
If so,check all wiring from key to starter solenoid, clean contacts at solenoid.Check solenoid not damaged.

Thanks. When it does this, there is no sound at all. It does not even attempt to turn over. Had to jump solenoid yesterday while on water and it fired right up.

Did you clean connections at solenoid And test it?If so it sounds like you need to replace Solenoid.
