Do you have spark on both cylinders?

Did you replace the driver coil with a new one? Does the motor have electric start and a kill switch?

You could have a prob in the stop circuit wiring.

Yes I replaced the driver coil with an OEM one from marine engine. The motor doesnt have electric start but it does have a kill switch. I checked the kill switch with a multi meter...it has continuity when the button is pushed and no continuity when not pushed so it seems to be working. I just ordered an ignition tune up kit from marine engine which includes new points and condensers I also ordered both ignition coils. I will re-check the kill switch tomorrow.. hopefully I can get this thing going. Any other pointers would be much appreciated. I also checked continuity from the wires to the ignition coils to the points and they all had continuity.

Is there a way to bypass the kill switch to see if that is the problem???

The wires from the kill switch are wired into the primary wires going to the coils. Take the connectors apart and use some jumper wires for the coils only wiring leaving the kill switch wires out and see what happens.

I had a '75 J20 last year with similar issues (same 22 cubic inch engine pretty much) and I replaced the entire ignition plate with an older universal magneto style. It just dropped right on. I removed the external coils and it all worked great. Of course you need an older mag plate to do so. But if you happen to have one lying around...

Re: Still Not Firing 1976 25hp Evinrude

If the points are new/clean and adjusted properly, and you installed a new driver coil, and the kill wires aren't grounding out somewhere, then the only other possibiilty is the external coils or bad spark plugs. I'd probably go with Samo's idea, as those external coils are expensive - around $55 apiece. Bad plugs is a possibility. I just fixed a motor for a guy - had brand new Champion plugs in it, but no spark. The plugs had no continuity and weren't firing. Put a different set of plugs in and she ran fine.

The points are not new I just cleaned them the best I could and adjusted them. One of the condensor wires was skint back I taped it to see if I could get any spark but nothing. I am currently waiting on the new coils (I ordered both) and new points and condensors. I havent checked for continuity through the spark plugs but I will. I will update this after the new parts come in HOPEFULLY that will fix the spark problem. I thank you all for the help.

I was at work today and my wife called and said the part for the boat is here. So when I got home I replaced the 2 coils and still no fire...I was like NOOOOOOOOOOO so I replaced the condensers and points put the flywheel back on and said a little prayer before pulling the rope lol had my spark tester hooked up with a 3/8 gap and nice blue spark..put the plugs in pulled the rope and the motor started up first pull... I would like to thank you all for the tips Im taking the boat to the river this weekend to see how she does.
