Hello all Iam a new owner of 2005 175 bayliner capri with a 3.0 135hp motor. The last time i was out on the water i heard a clattering noise coming from behind the engine. This only occurs at 2500 rpm and above. I have since taken off the valve cover checked the lifter all seemed normal. I have used a pole and listend to all the cylinders and i have changed the oil twice no metal in the oil. I tried adding some engine honey to see if that would quite it and it did nothing same sound. I then thought about greasing the gimbal bearing and shaft that did nothing either. Iam not sure where to go from here or what it might be( U- joints?) please help!!!!! Thanks for any advice

Have you ever had the outdrive off to inspect things? Bellows for water, ujoints, gimbal bearing, alignment, etc. ?

OK, try draining and re-filling the gear oil in the outdrive to see if/how it effects the noise.

highly doubt that will do anything. My vote is bad u-joints.

Hey thanks guys i get off work in the morning i will try some of those ideas. Don i have never taken off the outdrive i just got the boat about 4 months AGO. Also i just Remembered that the other day when i was greasing the shaft I found a bunch of grease right where the shaft goes through the back of the boat against the plate Not sure what to think of that. i think taken off the outdrive looks easy but it will be my first time.

actually, of all the things that get done on a regular basis, this is not difficult at all. Get a manual and you will zip through the process. you will also gain peace of mind to know the uj's are in good shape.

Re: mercrusier drive shaft making noise

Hey guys so i replaced the gimbal bearing and it aligned. I then took the out drive inspected the u joints look great. Now i put it all back together took it out on the lake when i first go into gear i hear what seems to be a exhaust leek sound and when i lean over the back i hear a knocking noise from the drive area. It goes away until i get on a plane then it comes back just louder. I also hear a grumbling noise when it is first put into gear. I'am not sure where to go now. Oh and when in neutral the motor sounds great,no noise. Please help pulling my hair out chasing a noise!!!!!
