How to adjust throttle on 88 Bayliner Capri?

I'm a first time boat owner and recently purchased a used 88 Bayliner Capri. I took it out for the first time with the family on Fathers Day... It ran well :) but I think I have some throttle issues. :(

When I first went from Neutral to Drive after first putting the boat in the water; it engaged into Drive fine. But when I attempted to go into Reverse, I noticed that I had to move the throttle back (to the rear) pretty far before it kicked into Reverse. The engine also reved up pretty high before it dropped into Reverse. The same thing happened when I moved it back into Drive (i.e. engine reved up and then slammed into drive with a bit of a jolt) after coming from Reverse.

How should I address this?

1) Am I operating the throttle incorrectly? Meaning am I moving it too slow between Neutral and the Drive/Reverse gear?

OR

2) Does my throttle need adjustment. And if so, how do I go about testing this or fixing it?

OR

3) Could it be both - I'm moving throttle too slow and needs to be adjusted.

Thank you!

Thanks for the quick response... I hope this is the information you've asked for, if not then please let me know and I will see what else I can dig up.

OMC cobra 2.3 liter 4 cylinder I/O ( 130 HP ) - I believe its either a Ford Tempo or Ford Escort motor.

I agree with the shift cable. however the 2.3 liter is a pinto motor that became a ranger motor.

Thank you both for the feedback. I'm bringing the boat to a mechanic tomorrow and will give him these instructions. I hope he's not offended by it. I've never used him before and I just want to make sure he knows what he's doing. By way... What do you mean by "however the 2.3 liter is a pinto motor that became a ranger motor." Does this apply to my 88 Bayliner?
