Score or make me poor?

Ok, so I always have a look through the boat section on craiglist cause I really want a boat (wife is hell bent against it). Well I was lookin and my father in law is in town and I pulled up a 1982 30' Scarab Sport. Add says, "family emergency need to sell right away." I always find things like that to be a bit of a scam but my father in law, who knows more about boats than me but can be a bit overenthusiastic, says its too good a deal to not look at. Boat info:

Year: 1982
Model: Wellcraft
Make: 30' Scarab Sport
Engines: Twin 235 Johnson V6's outboards (I think two stroke but not sure)

Condition: Judging by the pictures its in really good condition. Whoever owned it was meticulious about keeping the interior clean (no pictures of sleeper cabin though). Hard to say what the hull looks like because the pictures were of it in the marina but its in a fresh water lake so I can't imagine its too bad. Not sure what year the Johnsons are but the ad says they run great (obviously before I would consider I would want proof of this).

Bottom line: This boat is way bigger than anything I want or need so I would probably just try to turn around and sell it for more. My father in law seems to think if those motors are in good shape and the boat looks as good as it doesn in the photos I could get 16-19k for it. The asking price is 8k I would be happy to turn it around for 10-12k. Any opinions on whether or not this thing is worth even calling on and looking at? Thanks in advance for any advice or input you all may have.

I don't know what market you live in but there is no way you would make any profit by flipping that boat in FL. Post up the link. No one is going to buy it out from under you.

Well, I did check that (first place I went). It says average price is $3700. I'm assuming that $3700 doesn't include the motors because it didnt let me put any info in about the motors. Also, I did some searching and similarly equipped boats I found on the web are going for 5-16k just depending on their condition. So, I found it really difficult to get an accurate gauge on what this thing may be worth. I guess its worth what someone is willing to pay huh?

Its ads like the one you just posted that makes me think maybe I could make a little money on this deal. I will say I am a bit of a skeptic but I went ahead and called on the boat and will be going to look at it this evening. Any suggestions for things to look for/lookout for?

Keep your focus on finding you a boat and don't be distracted by the other ads. 8k sounds high to me for a 30 year old boat and large boats are not worth near as much as smaller more popular sizes.

That's a seriously cool boat and the price seems fair to me.

Hard to say about the price being right or not. You know you have a 3500.00 hull and it is a Scarab which is an entry level boat and it's a very early design. Those 235's would need to be looked at hard before I'd put my money down. I would not consider them in the selling price as anything but parts motors.

The fact that it's rigged with outboards, instead of the usuals I/O, is a plus, but be aware that they'll be thirsty as hell, being 2-stroke. A see trial is mandatory to check their condition. Also, make sure to don't buy a money pit (rotted transom, deck, stringers) and bring a soft faced mallet...

I went and looked at it. It was a nice boat, motors ran, interior was a little dated but clean and nice, but its way bigger than anything I want or need. The guy was very firm on his price I tried to talk him down to 6K but he wasn't having it. I think I will just let this one go because I don't think I could turn around and sell it for anything more. I only need/want a 17-20' center console fishing rig. I don't need a 30' monster gas guzzler, although I think it would have been a really fun boat to own.
