I have owned a 1979 Johnson 70 HP Sea Horse for several years now, but I have never been able to get an impression of the reputation of this type of engine. Mine seems to be in great condition. Any of you want to weigh in on how good or not so good this particular engine is? Any maintenance specifics I should watch out for? Prop recommendations? 100_5472.jpg

Iam a big fan of these motors have a collection from 1970 to 1984 if yours is used in salt water , watch out for the salt build ,as they are well known to get water in to the ports i have done some improvement & modifications to these motors .

Nope, always kept in fresh water. Runs great. Starts up in less then five seconds every time.

i normally mix just a little extra oil with my fuel about 115ml to 5lts , it does no harm very important , i always say rather a little extra oil then not enough

One of the best designs ever! I have had several 3-holers over the years, and still have my 1980 75hp. Solid design, great on fuel, good parts availability, runs like a banshee, and they sound cool, too!

MAintenance - do a decarb - poke around on iboats for specifics.

Prop - set it up to peak in the high 5000 RPM range. I like to aim for about 5800 RPM. Anything less than 5400 or so is lugging it and will kill it over time.
