Looking at my new 60 HP, 4 stroke, with a horizontally mounted oil filter and wondering how to change that filter without making a big mess.

I tuck an oil absorbent pad below the filter before removing it. Don't we all just 'love' those engineers! NOT!

I duct tape a cardboard 'v' just below the crankcase oil drain plug to channel the oil into my pan.

Using the carbord V as CharlieB dose and under the oil filter works to drain the filter by punching a hole in th filter on or near the bottom will let the oil drain from the filter. Use a screwdriver or an scratch awl to make the hole.

Thanks for the ideas. Probably a good idea to try to empty the filter cartridge before loosening it.
