Hey guys,
I am a proud new owner of a 1990 Seaswirl with a Johnson 120 V4 (my first outboard) Everything seems to be in good condition but before I take it out for the first time, I want to make sure that its running the best that it can. I want to do a combustion chamber clean therefore, I've been reading up on a few different products and they all say they do the samething. I'm looking to see if anyone has a reviews on certain products they have used in the past. In addition, I want to do a fuel system clean as well. Any tips on general outboard tune-up would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks for the time!

Re: Internal Engine cleaning

honestly i would proberly just change plugs and add seafoam to the gas tank. as long as the tell-tale has a good stream of water i would then do a real short run in friendly water to see if any thing is wrong. its always a good idea to have a base line before fixing what may not be broke. we all make mistakes and rebuilding carbs, link and sync can go horribly wrong for a first timer and the first question you will be asked is did it run before you rebuilt, cleaned it.

Re: Internal Engine cleaning

Thanks alot. I've read up on Seafoam and I have not come across a bad review. I've already ready taken it out for a test run and it performed well. Sputtered a bit but probably due to bad gas. Thanks again for the advice!

Sea Foam is a 'now and then' treatment and should not be used regularly. OMC/BRP has a product called Carbon Guard that you may use, but be sure not to overdose. Most of these products 'cleans' by increasing the temperature in the combustion chamber which might not always be a good idea on permanent basis.

You can also use BRP engine tuner or mercury power tune. Spray quite amount of it into the cylinders put the plugs back in wires left off and roll it over for about a second, let it sit over night. Start it up on the hose and let run, you'll be surprised how much crap comes out the exhaust. Then remove the air box cover and spray the rest into each carb intake, you will have to keep revving it up a little with the throttle linkage on the engine, or if you a buddy they can use the control box.

Thanks for all the good advice fellas! I really appreciate it! I've also read up on Evinrude/Johnson 2 cycle oil that has CarbX mixed in. Good idea?
