plastic fuel filters and pre 1984 hoses

An article in "Seaworthy" mag. states, all engines built prior to 1984 have hoses that were not built to "SAE J 1527" standards, and are not capable of withstanding ethanol blends.
The article also states that "Some older boats may still have plastic fuel filters bowls and should be replaced."

Both my older Mercs. are pre 1984 and have the plastic fuel filters on them.

Has anyone found these filters to be a problem, or are they just crying Wolf ????

yes, I have fuel/water seperator filters on both boats and change them twice a year.

My concern is, can the orig. factory plastic housed filters cause a problem ?????
