I am having a problem with my 1974 Johnson 4HP Seahorse. Problem started when I ran the motor before completely cleaning out a mouse nest that was under the cover. After pulling the carb and reed cage and cleaning both, the motor will start and run rough. It smokes A LOT, and is dumping oil into the water. At full throttle, the motor will run only at the same speed as a fast idle. After disconnecting the fuel line, it will run the same until it is about to run out of fuel, then it will begin running like it should ( really fast- for about 3 or seconds), until it runs out of fuel. This condition is the same no matter where the high and low speed needles on the carb are set. I wound up putting a new carb rebuild kit in, but the same probelm persists. The fact that it takes off running well just before running out of fuel makes me think it is somehow getting too much fuel ????
