i have a new 5hp engine i want to replace on my sears gamefisher. How hard is it to remove the engine? Does anyone have the steps to do it or some guidance?

I see six hex bolts under the engine as it attaches to the column but how is the drive shaft connected to the motor. I worry on starting this without some advice.

thanks

I'm not sure I understand . . . so I'll ask. . .

Are you replacing the the powerhead of the 5 hp engine . . . or taking a 5 hp engine off a Sears Gamefisher boat?

If it is the later, that's easy.

first we need the model number, older outboards used a clutch shift, the newer models used a positive shift....I will take a guess since you say its a gamefisher that its positive shift F-N if thats the case you will need to shift to nuetral remove the small inspection plate from the lower part of the leg and disconnect the shift linkage then remove your 6 bolts. If its the older clutch shift you may need to remove the nuetral lock spring and rod.
The drive shaft is a splined 7/16 male shaft....not a big deal but I would need the model to say for sure.

model 217.586611
yes positive shift
so i assume after doing as you describe when I free the motor the entire drive shaft lifts out? Or does that remain in the leg?

it will slip out unless its rusted in, then you would just need to soak the shaft through the exhaust relief holes with some PB blaster with the outboard standing on it head, might take a day or so of soaking if its rusted bad....hopefully not

Good luck:)
