I am working on restoring my boat. Right now I am working on the interior but have run acrossed a huge problem. The guy I bought my boat from took out the counsoles and replaced them with plywood. In all reality this would be fine but I dont want to put any carpeting in my boat so I am wondering the best way to go about this. Is it possible to find the old counsoles out of a boat in a salvage yard if so are there any in Minnesota? Or does anyone have any good ideas for me.

Have a look in the restoration section http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22, more than 25000 threads and plenty of skilled people willing to help! You'll find it all, from a simple vynil repair to a complete build from scratch (ok, most of them are deck/transom replacement!)...

Welcome to iboats MissAdventure.

Unfortunately, the consoles used in those boats from the '80, were made very poorly, and they rotted.
So I doubt you will find any used replacements.

ANY plywood in a boat should be treated with a resin sealer, like the stuff used in fiberglass work.
Mix it and paint it on to seal and strengthen the wood.

If you are not using carpet, what will be on the floor? Marine vinyl?

Many boats have floors and consoles covered with marine grade vinyl.

I have used this on consoles and dashboards.

And I have used these 2 on floors.

I am looking to redo the entire boat and I was looking at Marine Vinal. So you believe that sealing the wood and making a plywood counsole is my best bet? This is my first boat, I bought it 2 years ago and repainted it and it ended up getting horrible dock rash so I decided to gut it out entirely and make it custom. Do you have any advice on what to do with the denting and scratches? Or any other advice on this project?

I used the Nautolex vinyl on my Tracker resto:

It's very important to seal your plywood before putting any kind of finish covering on it. Epoxy resin sealer is the best and strongest. Between sealing your plywood with epoxy and the water sheding properties of the vinyl, your plywood will last for a generation or 2.

Plywood or aluminum will be your best bet for console materials, with plywood being the cheapest and easiest to work with.

I don't worry about dock rash or small dents on my boat, they give it character and she wears them proudly!... but if you don't like them you need to buy and use fenders for your boat.

This is another members Tyee resto thread in progress:

I have just torn everything out of my boat and with how the bottom is I decided I want to put down diamond plating. Do you think there would be any cons to this? Also what would be a good coating to put on the diamond plating to make it not slippery and finish it?

No coating needed on diamond deck, that's the whole purpose of the raised diamond pattern.

The only cons I can think of right off hand are it is noisy, it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and if you use the bright finish the reflection from the sun will bake/blister you.
