so an update

My motor wouldnt stay running on idle. So I cleaned the carbs to potentially fix the problem.
In the process I must have disrupted something else. Or it just happened at the same.

Anyways my motor wouldnt start up and run after that. (Fly wheel would turn...it would sound likes its trying to start)

I found that the top 2 sparks would not spark very well...the bottom 2 were fine

I replaced the coils....I still have the same problem

It has spark on the top 2 now but its weak nowhere as good as the bottom 2

Could this be a bad switchbox?
What else could it be?
and would this stop my motor from starting....from what ive read it should still start even if i do have very little spark

thanks alot
oh btw its 1985 75hp 4 cylinder 2 stroke

(ive taken apart the carbs and their fine...it is getting fuel)
when i try to start it i will get some smoke...and it sounds like its really close to starting...ive played with the idle adjustment and still get nothing ive also sprayed gas into the carbs.

If you have a volt meter try and check the ohms through the wiring harness plug.

Very common to have these rot out and do just what your describing

Re: ok im close to getting this motor going

A hot blue 7/16 inch arc is needed on all cyls.

Failing that, you can download the FREE Ignition Troubleshooting Guide from the Sopport pages of CDIElectronics

Their easy to follow step-by-step guide directs you how to test each component of the ignition system to identify the defective item.

You will need a DVA meter or a DVA adaptor for any volt/ohm meter. An adaptor can be built quite easily and cheaply following the directions posted here

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=374544

Remember, there is NO RETURN on electrical parts, test twice to be sure before ordering any parts.
