New guy here and tinkering with the above motor. Been sitting a long time....sometime in the 90's. I've changed plugs, all the associated lower unit stuff, and rebuilt the carb. The motor has great compression but it won't run. It seems like it just doesn't get spark, or enough of it. Pulled the plug to check, but couldn't see a spark in the bright sun light, so we checked the old fashioned way by getting zapped:redface:. I was also cheating when trying to start the motor by using a battery cable from my truck directly to the starter. It turns over great to the point the water pump is shooting water properly, but it just won't fire. The motor is on a stand and using one of those 55 gallon plastic barrels......all tips are greatly appreciated. Would like to see this thing running.

It sounds like it's time to pull the flywheel and go through the ignition system. Pull the flywheel and let us know what you see. Are the coils new, or are they old and cracked. If they are the latter, then replacement will be necessary.

I had a simmilar problem with a 56 30 hp Johnson. I cleaned and gapped the points to .020, then I pulled the plug wires out of the coil boots, cut back 1/2 inch to get a fresh contact. This did the trick. Good luck!
