I have completely disassmbled a lower unit. The oil was in horrid condition. I would like to clean the parts am unsure what cleaner to use. Would carb cleaner hurt anything (as long as I washed thoroughly afterwards)? Any other suggestions?

A little more information would be nice such as year, model, HP rating, and serial#. Different years use different size lower units with the same HP rating.

Solvent ie: paint thinner/brakekleen (my personal choice). Main thing is as long as safe for aluminum and steel. Dry with compressed air, don't make bearings spin, give light coat of penetrating oil after inspection to any steel components. We use hot water based parts washers at work (Caterpillar dealer) to clean all components.

Could you clarify "oil horrid condition" water or lots of metal? Lots of metal, you may be wasting your time trying to clean bearings

I reserve brake cleaner for hard to remove stuff.

Diesel fuel should work well for milky/bad oil. Dry with compressed air.
