What should cylinder compression be.
Thanks to those who steered me away from the cobra 350 yesterday...

A 5.7 (350) doesn't care if it is in a Mercruiser or an OMC package. The basic engine is the same. It is a great engine. Look at the basics like compression, etc. Are you buying a boat? Or an engine? There's a lot more to looking at a boat than just the engine.

A 5.7 (350) is probably as bullet proof as they come. You would have an alpha (gen I?) or a version of the bravo drive. They have good part and repair support.

Compression should be within 10% on all cylinders. Probably psi readings of 150 or above.

Bought a 1992 24 ft 'Thundercraft express with a 5.7 Merc. Compression varied between 135 and 145 warm. Only 816 hours.
Wondering what the very best prop would be.Had a 17 pitch with vortex but thinking may be wrong as still a bit sluggish to get out of water...
