I'm looking at buying a 1962 Johnson 10hp Model # QD-23r

The seller says it has good spark and the compression is 120psi on both cylinders.

Do these engines have any issues?
What fuel/oil ratio?

Thanx

As best I can remember they were pretty good engines if maintained properly. I beleave you are going to have to use a 24:1 fuel mixture.

hi oldrudedude. I have a '61 QD-22 and it's great. The QD models are very well regarded and strong for their size. About the only weak spot on them is the clutch dog, which can get worn over time. The compression sounds perfect, so all the rest can be fixed with ease. I say go for it. 24:1 is the proper mix for the later QD's like yours, but the earlier ones up to about '58-'59 were 16:1. She may smoke a bit in the test tank, but mine barely smokes at all on the water, especially at WOT. Keep us posted.

wow, 120 psi per hole? That's awesome for a 49 year old QD

when checking it over, take a straight slot screwdriver with you and open the drain screw slightly...if a small amount of water is present, not so wonderful, but could be worse..if a cup or more is present, buyer beware, esp. if there's almost no oil present

I believe pretty much all the QD's from at least '53 were 24:1 (I own one)-----then again, I've been wrong before. The '62 is for sure 24:1.
I'm suspicious of your compression gauge. I own 3 QD's and have worked on several others, and none of them had over 90psi. I wouldn't think that they would have 120psi when they were brand new.

Thank you all for your responses. I am a little suspicious of those compression readings myself. When I look at it I will do my own compression test. Checking for water in the foot is a good idea, probably would not have thought of that myself. I guess my major concern is parts availability. Appears that tune up parts and carb kits are still available. Gotta love those old engines for their simplicity.

Will keep posted on it.

parts on most of the old E/J stuff from mid fifties and later are out there. those motors properly maintained will run forever. 120 lbs on a 10 hp seems high I agree.

Well, your guage could be off, but at least the numbers were even and that is the most important thing.
