Lower unit stuck?

Hey all, I've seen similar posts but not one for my engine. I've got a 1984 Johnson 8 long shaft and I'm trying to drop the lower unit. My book only says to remove 3 bolts and put it in forward, but it only dropped 1/2 inch and no more. What step am I missing? Do I need to disconnect the shift rod up top or something? Thanks!

How do I disconnect the shift rod? My book doesn't say, and I can't locate a separation point.

there is a retaining ring on it so it should just pop out

Re: Lower unit stuck?

Okay, I was able to drop the lower unit; it just needed some encouragement with a rubber mallet. However, the driveshaft stayed attached to the upper unit and doesn't want to pull out. Anybody know how to get that out so I can reassemble the unit with the water pump?

Clamp the d/s in a vice with the mtr upside down, Mix up some ATF and Acetone 50/50 and squirt that in the upper spline area. Let it hang for a few days while adding the mix. Put some down pressure on it and it should break loose. PATIENCE!

If the ATF/Acetone and patience doesn't yield results...

If you have the tools, tap the end of the driveshaft 1/4-20 and use a slide hammer. You'll need good bits and cutting oil. 30 minute job and it'll be out.

Good luck!

Thanks! I'll be starting that process tomorrow; I never expected a "learning experience" to be easy!

Is there any risk to inverting the outboard? I've read mixed messages about that.
