I have been working on a 1986 115 hp merc. The engine had a miss which I corrected and I have all the carbs set. I have not checked compression on any of the cylinders, but the engine dies a little when taking any of the spark plug wires off. The bottom carb had the needle sticking but i used a cleaning additive and it fixed the problem.
The problem I am having is it wont idle down so I can shift into gear, and when you do by some miracle get it into gear fast or slow the boat will stall unless you pump the throttle.
I had a boat mechanic set the carbs, he has never worked on this particlar motor. I asked if we should check the timing or the linkage going to the stator< never thinking of teh stator itself. He suggested first check compression.

Compression Is nunmber 1.
It just takes the equation out, or adds, to so many things.
I know people hear it alot about compression, saying it can't be that.
Best starting point. .02
