7.4L GI idles good runs bad

Got a 96 7.4L GI Volvo duo prop. Boat idles good but when I give it throttle it runs up to about 3000 rpm and dies out. As quick as I pull it back to neutral and get right back in the throttle it picks right back up. If you keep it in gear and pump it, it will back fire. Acts like water in fuel but fuel water seperator is clean. Does not do it all the time, if it does it once it will do it several times in a row. Plan on checking plugs, wires, and etc...Anybody got any suggestions

Possibly and highly likely water in fuel. You'd be hard pressed to detect water phase in fuel filter. See also my response in http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=503015. Change fuel-water separator filter. Make sure you use a 6 micron filter. If you can find an aftermarket to the Volvo Penta p/n, let us know by posting. V-P seem to be the only one specifying 6 micron ...
