I have a 1998 Mercury 40 ELPT and was running it on the river yesterday, when I went too full throttle the engine shut down. When I tried too restart it it would run for 5-10 seconds then shut off again, anyone have an Idea what may be causing this issue.

Re: Mercury Motor Issues

Check fuel supply to the carbs. Disconnect the fuel hose, crank the motor and see if you are getting a strong pulsed flow. Fuel pump, bad hose, stuck valve in the primer, clogged pick-up tube or fitting at the tank, air sucking into a cracked hose or fitting.
