Is it possible to use an electronic ignition from a car with the same size gm motor
serial #a311449,model#mcm140,merc outdrive

Not sure about that, but whatever you do, don't ever use an alternator from a car for your boat.....

no, don't do that. ign. systems on boats are spark protected so they don't spark. autos are not. auto ign. systems are not uscg approved. they are a explosion hazard.

+ a 3.0 i don't believe was ever in a car. it's an industrial use engine + marine use.

imho. stick with the points. i still got points, they work fine. the engine was designed to be used with points. you won't gain anything other than not replacing points by going electronic. no performance benefits.

If you want to convert to electronic, the best way is to convert to the Delco EST distributor. It all electronic, including advance, no more springs and weights. Mercruiser also went to the EST distributor, so finding parts, manuals, and specs is very easy to find.
