Mercruiser outdrive water pump leaking with muffs on

Sorry to keep posting on this. I just installed a new water pump (housing and all) on my 74 pre-alpha. I'm assuming this is supposed to be water tight, so I hooked up the muffs to see if it leaked. WAter ran from the back of the housing toward where my shift knob is. I'm pretty sure it's coming from between the bottom housing and where the water comes in from the bottom of the outdrive. I've looked at all the diagrams and studied for hours to find the problem. My oil seals are in the bottom housing and the o-ring is in the groove on the bottom housing. Any idea on why it's still leaking? Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I definitely don't want to do any damage. Thanks for any advice.

Did you use the copper tube guide while installing the lower unit?. Or perhaps the seals for the copper water tube are bad.

No, didn't use any copper tube... The lower and upper units of the outdrive are disassembled though, should that make a difference on whether or not it leaks around the water pump housing? Probably a dumb question, I know!

There is a guide tube that goes on top o f the pump outlet to help align the water tube that carries the water up to the powerhead. If that did not get properly inserted into the pump you will get NO water to the engine and lots of water where you are getting it.
