Changing oil what kind should i go with.

I have a 1988 mercruiser 5.0 alpha 1 I have owned for about 3 months now and want to change the oil.The motor has 1069 hours on it.What is the best oil for the motor?In the past when i had a new engine built for another boat the mechanic used valvoline vr1 40 and it ran great.Can i use that in this engine now after using other oils.

realize that when you ask this question, you are going to get "i use this oil and it's great", you are changing it, that's the important thing. If you do a search, you'll find a bunch. Now, my .02, I use what the Merc Manual tells me, any name brand I can find. If I remember right, that is HD40 straight. Hopefully you'll get other options as well from some others on the board. Good luck
