I've been doing a lot of reading on this site since I bought this boat and have gotten some great advice and ideas from it. I thought I would start off with a few pictures (I've read enough to know that's a "must").

I found the boat last fall on Craig's list. It was listed for $500, but I ended up getting it for $250 - boat, trailer, and 50HP Force motor. The guy who owned it is the son-in-law of the original owner and just really needed to get rid of the boat. (I probably would have paid the $500 - but he was anxious to sell - and had marked down the price by the time I got to see the boat). It was originally a Michigan boat, but I ended up buying it here in Georgia.

So far, I've removed the the old deck and foam, cleaned up the interior and applied my Gluvit. I'll be going back in with the new foam and new deck soon. I've also been busy on the hull and the trailer. The hull was painted with something - I'm not sure what it was, but it wasn't "right". The paint's flaking off down to the gray primer. The paint was flaking off the trailer also and there was a bit of rust. The transom is solid and I didn't find any leaks - even prior to the Gluvit.

After the deck - I'll get busy again on prepping the hull for paint. I've paid close attention to the posts regarding painting and I think I'll go the Rustoleum route.

I don't think that I want to put all the lights and horn back on when it's time, so I'm open for suggestions on how to fill the holes.

Ezmobee had asked for a close-up of the name plate (sorry for the poor quality pic) It says 16' Viking if you squint at the photo just right.

Thanks again for all the advice and the great forum. As I make progress - I'll post more pictures.

Looks like a great little boat you have there 60. From the side photo of the motor it looks like the leg length is too long. The cavitation plste should be even with the bottom of the hull.

Yeah I agree about the motor and they already have it blocked up an inch and a half with that block of wood. Having it up that high on the transom is NOT a good thing, In my opinion. You might want to consider a Jack Plate or modifying the transom. I am NOT a Tin boat expert so lets se what they say when they drop in. As for the lights you MUST have the proper lights on a boat for safety. You should check with your state to see what is required and for sure have that. If you don't want to keep the SPOT lights then you can post them on Ebay. See em on there all the time.

nice score !

yes ...it is a long shaft on a short shaft transom...you are loosing speed....(some times that does not matter)

one thing........you NEED THOSE LIGHTS AND HORN....the law says so. and if i caught you running at night with out them, i would give you a stern talking to !....
or if you break down and are floating in the middle of the night you will want them....
if you dont like the looks of the lights....they can be changed out for others that look different....but you need them.

EZ will find this thread and help with your tinny questions.......we are all here to help.

cheers

Oops and Wood, I'm sure be meant the ridiculous spot lights and giant horn, not the nav lights. Yeah, I'd ditch those too.

I put this nav light on mine and it's sweet: http://www.iboats.com/Attwood-1nm-L...5764940--**********.932976137--view_id.372291

You can replace your horn with with a less conspicuous model such as this: http://www.iboats.com/Seasense-Stai...55764940--**********.932976137--view_id.56059

Yep, you've got a long shaft motor on a short transom. Here's a slick way to deal with that: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=321432 as it will seriously impact your performance.

Re: 1960 Starcraft Viking restoration

Thanks for the input.

Yes, I'm thinking of maybe one spotlight instead of two and a smaller horn.

I really appreciate the link to that homemade Jack Plate. I had something in mind similar to that to raise the motor, but I'm glad to see what others have done. (besides using scrap lumber to space things up!)
I didn't include any photo's of the inside of the transom, but you can clearly see the marks that the clamps on the jacked up motor made on the transom. It wasn't hanging on to too much material.

I just got one of these the other day. my serial number is 61-7499 so I'm trying to nail down a year. I could only find brochures on it in the 1961 pamphlet.

Oddly enough I thought the spot light and the horn were really cool, then again, maybe I'm just getting old. I have the spots, but if you decide to ditch the horn let me know as mine is different and I like yours much better.
