mercury 800 thunder idle problems

well my walleye boat is down just at the best time of the season.My motor on my boat is blown so i found a cheap motor that would get me though the year but when i fired it up the timing belt broke so i replaced and know it runs great.The problem is it idles at a real fast speed i'm thinking around 1500rpm.I did replace all gas lines and stater need help thanks nick

You likely mis-installed the timing belt. Remove the distributor pulley cover. Rotate the flywheel until the cast pointer on the distributor pulley points at the punch mark on the flywheel. The timing mark should show TDC. If it shows any timing advance, adjust the timing belt until the flywheel shows TDC.

If the flywheel already shows TDC, you are still likely 1/2 tooth too advanced. Adjust the timing belt one tooth CCW.
