Ayuh,... It depends on Where ya are....

Around here, Pike, is short for Northern Pike....
I hear on the other side of the St. Lawrence, a Pike is a Walleye...

I've never heard of either being called a Jack....
Around here, a Jack is a year old lake run Salmon....

Different species go by different names in different places.

A Northern Pike may also be called jack, snake, pike and other names. A Walleyed Pike is usually called a walleye but is also called a pike or a jack.

The chain pickerel of the atlantic regions is often called a jack.

Largemouth black bass are called cypress trout in parts of the south, and black and white crappies have so many different names they would fill this page.

So, yes and no (mostly no) Northern Pike, Pike and Jack are not always the same fish, just sometimes. :)

Thanks guys, yes I live in Canada. Wally are also called Pickerel hear. The argument I had with a friend was that he insisted that Pike and Northern Pike were not the same, insisted that they had different markings.

In Florida the Chain Pickerel, like the Northern Pike (but smaller) is called a jack. I have caught Northern Pike, and Chained Pickerel, they look exactly the same. There is a size difference though, we have caught some 4 or 5 lb Pickerel but that is very large for those guys here in FL, while up north the Northerns can grow considerably larger.

I am not a biologist just a fisherman.

Nope,.... That's Untrue....

Northern Pike are light spotted on a dark background...

Chain Pickerel are light colored bodys with dark markings...

To make things even more confusing...there are also Tiger Muskie, which are half-breed Pike and Muskie.:D

I was really confused once when a Canadian fishermen was referring to walleye as pickeral.
