I have a 1979 merc 40hp currently on my boat. I rebuilt the starter, got the motor to turn over, and found that I have good compression in both cylinders, but no spark. this is due to a completely melted igntition switch box.
Today I bought a 1980 merc 40hp to use the parts from it on my 79. however, when i got the 1980 home and got to looking at it, I found it is much cleaner than my 79. The shop I bought it from said the #1 cylinder lost compression, but the rest of the motor is solid. So after looking at it, i started thinking about the possibility of just replacing the parts in cylinder #1 as opposed to using parts off the 1980 to fix up the 79. However, I cannot seem to get a clear answer on whether or not I can use the pistons out of my 1979 in my 1980. I will list the serial numbers below. Also, if the parts arent interchangeable, I would be interested if anyone knows where I can find a replacement piston, and what the part number would be for my motor. any help is appreciated.
1979 serial #: 5253808
1980 serial #: 5661617
