What are the laws on cars towing a trailer?

One of my friends asked me this last night, and i don't have a clue. She tried looking on the DVLA website and that didn't really help. I know the law changed in 1997 regarding towing. So if you got your licence after 1997 and the vehicle towing the trailer would be a land rover free-lander, would that be allowed to pull a small trailer big enough to have a large tent in it

Welcome to iboats. Your question is a little confusing. Are you asking if the vehicle is capable of safely towing the trailer? If so, the owner's manual should give you the towing limits of a Freelander. Probably at least a couple thousand pounds, but check to be sure.

If you are referring to the legality of a driver licensed after 1997...? That part I don't understand. I know in Ontario they revamped the entire new driver regs. No passengers, no major highways, no night time driving, zero blood alcholol level...all sorts of things until a certain license grade was attained. Never heard of a towing limitation, although that doesn't means it doesn't exist. Not a bad idea, actually. Someone licensed in 97 tho would have been driving for years...so...still confused!

If they were going to make a law they should make people take a test on trailer towing and BACKING before they issue a "towing" license

better yet, its a requirement that it be demonstrated with something the length of a suburban combined with a jet-ski trailer, empty.... That combination is by far the toughest thing you will ever back! Short wheel base trailer, long wheel base vehicle, and a trailer you can't see until its almost too late.

If it helps answer this thread, I think the OP is talking about the towing laws in England. I haven't lived there for 20 years, but I remember the term DVLA. (Driver & Vehicle Licencing Center in Swansea S.Wales)

In most places if you do not exceed the towing capacity of the vehicle and you are doing it as a private citizen there are no restrictions as long as you stay within the weight and width limits of the roads you're on.

I have & still do tow trailers with my Land Rover but have never towed in excess of its capabilities. My only concern would be that I don't think a LR Freelander has much tow capacity although I have never owned that model.

A whole lot of confusion with what you posted. I assume you are in the U.K. as well. I have not lived there for over 20 years either. It used to be explained on your license what you were qualified to do.

At least from watching deadliest roads india, I'd have to assume the only law is there are no laws!

The op is asking about towing in England. A freelander can tow a max weight 1800kg. If you passed you driving test after 1997 you can only tow 750kg unless you sit a trailer test.
