So here's the scoop. As you can tell, I'm new to this site (just made the account tonight, actually) so may you have mercy on my soul :D and try not to flame me too much if I'm out of line for this thread-moving on...

The engine is a 1957 Johnson outboard motor; model # Jw-13 and 3 horsepower (red colour scheme). I'm a fairly young guy, and taking a small engines course at my school. I'm about to delve into it and was just wondering if anyone here, should the time arise (which it most certainly will), knows where you can find some replacement parts for these engines. I did some quick internet searches but they were fruitless.

I'll try to post up a few pictures in the next day or so, but any input on where to find some basic parts for the Johnson would be greatly appreciated. It's been sitting in my garage for quite some time. Let's try to keep this friendly and any starter tips from the experts on here would also be helpful, thanks! (below is an example of the model I'm referring to)

Great little motor.

Welcome to iboats.

There is alot of knowledge on here, tuning up that old gal should be no problem at all. I would recccomend a factory Service manual, check ebay, trust me, it will pay for itself.

I will post a couple links that will apply to you.

Regarding parts, it really depends on what you need. If it is simply carb kit, plugs, water pump, etc..., your dealer can still get it for you. If it is trim pieces, etc, salvage yards or a post on aomci.org will help. What are you going to start with? Check for compression. Ensure she is sparking with a bright blue ZAP and will jump a 1/4" gap on an inline tester. If the coils are original, they will need to be replaced. Pretty certain the carbs will need a good cleaning/rebuild, and the fuel lines replaced if they are aged. The rubber impeller will be dry rotted and will need to be replaced.

Keep us posted on how you are doing and any questions you may encounter.

good luck

For parts, see the sticky Top Secret File for salvage yards. Also AOMCI's website has a free wanted/for sale webvertize section and you don't need to be a member to use it.

Many items such as carburetor kits, ignition parts, water pump impellers, seal kits, are available right here at iboats.

You would be surprised at how many parts are still available from Evinrude dealers. But many of them won't give you the time of day unless you go in with the part number in hand. Get yourself a parts book. It can be found on-line, free.
