Outdrive won't go back on

Alpha 1 Generation 2 counter rotating-

After replacing bellows, gimbal bearing, and shift cable... outdrive won't fully seat. It lacks about 2mm from being perfect.

Shift shaft is facing forward and shift slide seems to be aligned.

Any ideas what could be? Could I have not fully seated the gimbal bearing?

Thanks

Did you re-align the motor?
How easy does it go in to the point where are at?

Yep...realigned the motor with alignment tool. Slides on very easlily to that point then stops a couple of millimeters before hitting bell housing.

Perhaps I got a little crazy with too much spline grease and that is what is blocking it.

The grease is not likely, The bolts may have had a little corrosion on them.
My best idea is to start over, pull the drive, recheck the alignment, clean everything, including the holes in the drive. Then put it back on. Some times you just need to do it twice.
You can put the nuts on, then have someone slowly and evenly snug them while you roll the motor over. It should not take much force to get it in the rest of the way. Just be careful. I know Ill catch a lot of flak for saying that, but...

We all have days where nothing works, then you come back and it falls right in.

Thanks bifflefan...

Pulled drive back off to recheck alignment and check if o-rings were still in the right place. Cleaned a little excess spline grease and slid it back on with ease. Tightened nuts and good to go.

Just like you said...nothing was working, came back and it fell right in.

ON our alpha 1 gen 1 I had to pull back on the helm ever so slightly while a helper was pushing up on drive . She slipped right in and runs great. On alpha 1 gen 1 everything has got to be in forward gear when removing and assbeling.Dont know on yours.

Yep...must be in forward for shift shaft to line up. Unless it's a counter rotating drive...it needs to be in reverse WOT.
