What is the reliability of welding a 1988 Evinrude 40HP driveshaft back together at the original weld spot?

Welcome to iboats.

weld at the original weld spot???? Confused! Driveshafts are one piece and made as one piece w/o any welds. If you had a spot where it broke and there was "an old weld" there then it was repaired before.

many drive shafts broke durning those years below the water pump so it would pump water but wouldn't turn lower unit. if your broke there it was repaired before. driveshafts are one peice as the big boys said

Any good weld shop can reweld it and turn it.

Well, with all due respect, OMC did make some shafts that were welded. The portion inside the gearcase was steel so it could be heat treated, and the portion outside the gearcase was stainless steel for corrosion protection. I'm not sure what the welding process was, but I don't think it was the conventonal methods.

Not sure if this applies to the shaft under discussion in this thread.

Why would they do that when SS can be hardened?
I am pretty sure all the driveshafts on my engines(all 1958's and earlier) are all stainless

The process OMC used was called "Friction Welding". Where metal parts were spun at high rpm and then put together and the heat would weld them. That's why I asked, was this a prop shaft or d/s ? They did a lot of that on prop shafts.

Mr Keikhaefer said for years that Mercs had steel shafts because stainless was not strong enough for their motors. Anyhow, regarding your comment, yes OMCs of the 1950's had stainless shafts. It wasn't until into the late '60s - early '70s that the hybreds started to happen, and then only on certain shafts in higher horsepower motors. Mostly, I saw prop shafts break off at the weld right inside the seal area.
