I have a 1976 850 mercury 4 cylinder that I bought new. It has less than 150 hrs on it. It has been sitting in a breezeway for about 18 years, when I decided to get it ready to boat, found that all the wires on the engine were deteriorated, am wondering if this motor is fixable, it is not stuck, thanks for any help

Re: mercury wiring

All the old mercs have that issue; whoever they sourced their wiring harness from really had issues....

Internal wiring harnesses are readily available; try CDI.

You are going to need to replace all the fuel lines as well, and you should clean the carbs, replace the impeller, and service the lower unit oil.

No biggie....

Good luck; please feel free to ask more questions as needed....

BTW....Welcome to i-boats!

Well; of course anything can be fixed. I was in the same situation as you a few years ago. A friend had given me a free boat with Merc 850 on it. The wiring was so bad that I would not chance even hooking a battery up to it. I wanted to check the compression to see what I had; so in order to save money I just went ahead and re-wired it one wire at a time. That way I was able to get it running and further evaluate its over-all condition before spending $$$ on the genuine harness.

It's do-able that way...but you might find that the condition of the wires is so bad that it's difficult to solder on to them.

CDI makes aftermarket ignition components...Switchboxes, Stators, Triggers...They seem to get a good rap here and I have used their products.

Their products are available thru i-boats and they have their own website:

http://www.cdielectronics.com/Products.aspx?Criteria=4

If you want further help, please post your engine's serial number. That way you can zero in on all the various parts that you might need.

Your engine sounds like it would certainly be worth re-viving. You probably won't need to invest much to bring it back.

I'd be interested in following your progress....

Re: mercury wiring

Hey Red, Wiring harnesses are available from many places. Look around at surplusunlimited.com, crowleymarine.com as well as CDIElectronics.com

There is also vintagemercs.com and oldmercs.com, plus some junkyards (salvage yards)

Re: mercury wiring

The part number for the Mercury Service Manual is C-90-74041. They show up on e-bay now and then. There are also a lot of CD versions out there as well.

To tide you over, take a look at the sticky at the top of this forum...
