howdy
looking for any ideas!
this mid 80s engine is not producing very much power. Buddy let it sit for 9 years and I am trying to get it running properly for him.
Did cylinder drop test. Each cylinder is running fine with slight noticeable drop when pulling individual plug.
However...starting and running....Pulled the plugs to observe: each plug has similar burn pattern, but they are always wet and oily: as in they do not burn hot enough.
Hooked up a tach and flashed up the timing light.
Idle- 4degrees
1000rpm- 7degrees
1500rpm- 9degrees
thru 1750 the timing light starts to chit the bed and the strobe fires erratically and looks like the spark signal is falling apart.
Another event tied to this when we had it on the water, the motor was putting out only low amount of power, but several times it raced up and produced a ton of power momentarily and then backed off, as if the CDI "kicked in" for a few moments.
Other than the CDI, could there possibly be a loose/broken wire where trigger is? Where those wires go up the timing advance lever under the fly wheel?
would it be worth getting the CDI analyzed?
any ideas?
thanks!
